As
the legend goes when Pele, (one of a number of Hawaiian Volcano
Goddesses. In Hawaii, Goddess of Mount Kilauea, a still-active
volcano) married Ocean their union produced a great foaming of the
sea and great shards of green, yellow and silver flew from
Ocean’s depths as his mighty swells cooled Pele’s fires.
Many
old drawings of this particular legend show Pele holding a white
feather in her left hand – the side of Mount Kilauea down, which
the first lava flows were said to run. The Hawaiian people believe
that Pele honours her love for Ocean every year (on the
anniversary of the first eruption of Mount Kilauea) by sending a
new season of butterflies that have become one of the symbols of
Hawaiian culture.
