the stage by Rochelle Baptiste Eight young ladies are currently undergoing intense training for the 2005 Miss SVG Beauty Pageant. The pageant will be held on Saturday May 28, and is the first event on the calendar of activities for Vincy Mas 2005. Speaking at the first press conference for the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) earlier this week, Chief Executive Officer Ashford Wood said this year’s competition promises to showcase the diversity of Vincentian young women. He said the Beauty Shows Committee, once again headed by Cheryl Rodriguez, has planned a hectic schedule of events for the delegates leading up to the competition. The delegates will make their first public appearance at the official launch of Vincy Mas 2005 on Saturday May 7. Wood said the committee has also started early preparations with the delegates for the talent segment of the competition, which will be done a little differently this year. Among the gifts the winner of Miss SVG 2005 will receive is a university scholarship.

The CDC is apologizing for the earlier mix-up in the initial release of results and is congratulating all participating steel bands.

It got off to a late start but Carnival was definitely in the air as a large crowd gathered to witness the launch of P’tani Mas. by Jennifer Richardson Thousands of Carnival lovers flocked the Chamber of Industry and Commerce car park Saturday as Vincy Mas 2004 launched off in grand style. All indications are that Saturday’s launch delivered on its promise of more fun, more flair more fantasy. The day long affair featured a diverse array of activities and presentations, which saw hundreds turning up to sample the day time activities designed to attract the entire family. One of the highlights was the Best New Song Competition, which included the traditional calypso category, and for the first time, a soca category. Lady-D was the first ever winner of the Best New Soca; second was Josiah; Stinga Nettle came in third. Lord Hawke was the first documented Road March King, and the first to win a hattrick of titles, doing so in 1971 – 1973. Hawke also took the Calypso Monarchy in 1976. The launch also featured appearances by the Miss SVG 2004 contestants, and rural Carnival queen contestants. This country’s representative to the Miss Universe 2004 Pageant, Miss SVG and Carival 2002 LaFerne Fraser, also made an appearance. The next item on the calendar of activities for the Carnival Development Corporation is the Miss SVG pageant scheduled for May 29, followed by Soca Swing, a joint-production with Hitz FM showcasing Vincentian Soca artistes on May 30. Meanwhile, Minister of Culture René Baptiste urged Vincentians to keep the Carnival clean and violence free. She noted that her ministry is continuing its promotions of Vincy Mas 2004 and reiterated her call for an end to the piracy of the work of local artistes. She indicated that if pirates don’t heed the warning then the last resort would be to seize illegal material. Baptiste also urged Vincentians to be kind to visitors and to patronize the various activities of Vincy Mas 2004.
No Pirates
by Keisha Phillips The Ministry of Culture and the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) will be seeking Police assistance in cracking down on persons who pirate the music of local recording artistes. Minister of Culture René Baptiste yesterday issued the warning to some ten unnamed pirate establishments located in and around Kingstown. Her warning comes as local recording artistes prepare to release their music for Vincy Mas 2004, which will be launched tomorrow. She says piracy is illegal and calls on persons to desist from this practice. Baptiste also appealed to deejays at radio stations and studio owners to stop making copies for the pirates. She further urged the recording artistes to attend and participate in a session called “cultural industries” that is being organized by the Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU) and the Ministry of Culture. She says government alone cannot effect the copyright laws, and stresses the importance of the establishment of a recording industry association here to push and protect the work of recording artistes under the Copyright Act 2003.

Song Support
by Keisha Phillips President of the Calypsonians Association Hassan Kennedy has spoken out against “foreign interests” that, according to him, threaten to destroy the calypso art form. Kennedy, who addressed a Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) press conference yesterday at the Victoria Park, noted that the CDC and its components do not always get what they want, but they continue to collaborate to produce a successful Carnival festival. Kennedy says calypso lovers are in for a treat this year because the calypsoes produced so far are of a high standard. He says a schedule for the opening of calypso tents will be released soon. Meanwhile, ten finalists have been named for the Best New Song competition slated to come off on May 8. The Best New Song competition will form part of the official launch of Vincy Carnival at the Chamber of Commerce Car Park in Kingstown on May 8.
All Lies
by Keisha Phillips The Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) today denounced what it says are lies being publicized by a local radio station regarding the staging of the private show, Insomnia, during Carnival. CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose lashed out at Hot 97.1 FM and some of its deejays at a press conference this morning as he tried to “correct some misinformation” on the issue. He says that the CDC has been meeting with private promoters who wish to host activities during the Carnival season, and pointed to the CDC Act No. 52, Section 6, that gives the corporation the authority to regulate such activities during the period. Ambrose reiterated that the CDC has no intention to control neither the private sector nor the components of Carnival. He says instead, the CDC embraces partnership with the private sector in developing the national festival and remains cognizant of its importance to the country’s economy. He further explained that the CDC is simply requesting that private promoters do not marginalize its program of events by “mirror-image” shows, and stressed that the CDC has told the host of Insomnia that the activity is similar to the CDC’s Soca Monarch and comes on the eve of this show. Ambrose strengthened the CDC’s argument by stating that Insomnia features the same artistes, both local and regional, who participate in the International Soca Monarch Show, which comes less than twelve hours later. He says this shows much disregard and disrespect for the CDC and its components, adding that the CDC should not be facing such challenges.
No Pan
by Keisha Phillips The Youlou Pan movement (YPM) has thrown its full support behind the CDC’s decision to allow the organizers of Insomnia to host that show on the night of Junior Carnival. YPM President Douggie “Nose” Joseph says Carnival is too important to allow any one organisation or group to hijack it. Joseph considers Hot FM to be anti-pan and says this adds to the YPM’s support of the CDC. He condemned the radio station’s management and staff, calling them selfish. But he also warns that if the CDC falls to their pressure there’ll be no pan for Vincy Mas 2004.

by Zhinga Greaves The On Tour Calypso Tent is getting ready to begin its tent season and has announced a launch date for May 14. Its cast for 2004 includes Lady D, Gams, Singing Shaunelle, Abijah, Azarah, Freedom Fighter, I-Reality, Jeremiah, Gringo, Pat Ralph, Ranking Bash and Ipa. The other countries that have so far given confirmation are the Dominican Republic, St. Kitts/Nevis, Grenada, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Puerto Rico. Local chairperson of the Beauty Shows Committee Cheryl Rodriguez this country’s representative to the pageant is expected to be Miss SVG 2004, providing she does not go on to win the Miss Carival show. She says in that case the 1st runner-up will be next choice. According to the pageant committee’s Public Relations Officer in Antigua Allan Williams, this year promises to be a show with a difference, providing a kaleidoscope of color, pageantry, beauty and intelligence emanating from the contestants.
No Clash
by Sheron Garraway President of Pan Kai Mas, Hugh Ragguette is sounding the group’s solidarity with the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) initiative to ensure that Vincy Mas is successful. Ragguette noted that it is crucial that other entertainment events do not clash with CDC shows and Pan Kai Mas will defend their initiative to regulate activities, which compete with the national festival. Coordinator of Rural Carnival, Sally-Ann Cuffy noted that there a 9 areas taking part in the festivities. She ensured that they are working on lifting the quality and making sure that they begin on time. Rural Carnival will be launched in East St George on May 21 at the Calliaqua Culture Pot.
Carnival Cards
by Sheron Garraway The Republic of China on Taiwan is extending its assistance to this country’s premiere festival, Vincy Mas. Ambassador Elizabeth Chu yesterday handed over two cheques for $2,000 each – one to the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) and the other to the Calypsonians Association. She noted that this is one of many donations to be made to the festival. Ambassador Chu also announced that the Taiwanese trade show, which runs from June 17 – 23, will also tie in with Vincy Mas. Ambassador Chu has also funded the printing cost of this year’s Vincy Mas postal cards, which were designed by Sean Young and Michael Ollivierre. The three cards, which depict the theme of this year’s festival – “More flair, more fun, more fantasy” – are now available to Vincentians and visitors. Minister of Tourism & Culture, René Baptiste, welcomed the initiative by the republic of china on Taiwan and noted that this type of cooperation makes programs work. CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose says the cards are not only attractive, but also very informative. Vincy Mas runs from the May 8 – July 6. Contestants Named

East St. George Plans
by Rochelle Baptiste With Vincy Mas just months away, the East St. George Carnival Committee is gearing up for its part of the festival. In an interview with svgbc.com, President of the committee, Clemroy “Bert” François says the East St. George Carnival this year will take the form of last year’s event, which will feature a calypso and queen show, street jump up and j’ouvert. Francois says at this point they are focusing on getting sponsors for the various events and in this approach they are presenting their major sponsors, including Hitz FM, with a report and financial statement of last year’s events. He says they are also seeking eligible young ladies to enter the pageant, which will be staged on June 11 at a venue to be decided upon. In relation to the calypso show, François says they are looking for six calypsonians from the East St. George Constituency to come up against each other in the event, which is scheduled for the same night as the queen show.
Carival 6 by Rochelle Baptiste Six countries have so far confirmed their participation in this year’s Miss Carival pageant scheduled for Friday July 2. Speaking earlier this week, Chairperson of Beauty Shows Cheryl Rodriguez, said these countries include Barbados, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and for the first time Colombia and Curacao. Rodriguez however said she has been given verbal confirmation of participation by the other countries including Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and the British Virgin Islands. Meanwhile, Rodriguez said final preparations are being made to have former Miss SVG and Miss Carival LaFern Fraser participate in Miss Universe 2004 scheduled for June 1 in Ecuador. Rodriguez said a committee is currently working feverishly to secure the franchise fees for Fraser and funds for her wardrobe. Fraser is expected to be in Ecuador by the middle of May to prepare herself for the pageant.
Quality Calypso by Rochelle Baptiste Newly elected President of the Calypsonians Association, Hassan Kennedy, is promising patrons quality kaiso this year. Speaking this week Kennedy said the organisation is working hard to get calypsonians produce their music much earlier this year so that the various radio stations could start playing their music, building up the tempo for Carival. Kennedy said this year they will also focus more on discipline, not only in the tents, but calypsonians’ behavior in public life. He says in this light they have already set up a disciplinary committee headed by Glenroy “Sulle” Caesar. The tents session for calypsonians this year will be held at the Russell’s Cinema. The six tents that will be producing calypsonians are Graduates, Stars, Calypso Theatre, Dynamites New York, On Tour and North South Leeward Stars. The semifinals for the calypso show will take place on June 25 with the finals on June 4.
No Competition
by Rochelle Baptiste Chairman of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) Dennis Ambrose says the CDC will not tolerate any competition this year from private organizers for sponsorship and shows that clashes with their scheduled events. Addressing the press conference on Monday Ambrose says while he welcomes new ideas from the private sector to boost the spirit of carnival there are persons who often put on shows and seek the same sponsorship as the CDC, which boycotts what they are trying to achieve. The CDC chairman says persons who are involved in such action will need to be much more nationalistic and more sensitive to the efforts of the CDC and its components and work out their plans well ahead of time with the CDC. Ambrose says this year the CDC will review their policy in that the mandate, which is vested in them should be carried out with as little infringement as possible.
Carnival Promotion
by Rochelle Baptiste Promotion for Vincy Mas 2004 will kick into high gear on the international scene later this month. Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste this week expressed delight with the early preparations for the festival. Baptiste says in the coming weeks a number of advertisements will be broadcasted in Canada, all geared towards promoting Vincy Mas 2004 and St. Vincent and the Grenadines as the ultimate tourist destination. Baptiste says currently negotiations are taking place with officials in the United States to buy some promotional spots using the various mediums there. Meanwhile, Baptiste says as a way of promoting calypso music for the four seasons she has managed to source spots for local artistes to perform short stints at a leading Canadian hotel called Taboo. She says former Junior Soca Monarch Neisha will be first to leave for Canada followed by The Harmonites who will leave these shores in June. Baptiste says all these opportunities should be used not only to make a buck but for the artistes to promote themselves and their country.
Carnival Plans
by Rochelle Baptiste “More Fun, More Flair, More Fantasy” is the theme for Vincy Mas this year. Speaking at the first press conference of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) for the year, Chairman Dennis Ambrose says the theme is in keeping with all the innovations they will be adding to the various events. Outlining the program for this year’s festival, Ambrose says Carnival will officially kick off on Saturday May 8 with the launch at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce car park and culminate on Tuesday July 6 with Mardi Gras. He says Clash of the Bands show will be back on the program of events after being absent for a number of years. Ambrose is promising patrons at the various CDC Carnival events their monies worth and noted measures are being put in place to have all shows start and finish on time. He also notes that in keeping with this year’s theme there will be no room for bad conduct and ugly behavior.
Eight Chosen by Rochelle Baptiste Eight young women are now well into training for the Miss SVG 2004 Pageant, which would feature several innovations this year. The Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) says that for the first time ever, the winner of this prestigious pageant would receive a scholarship, once she has the necessary entry requirements to attend a university. Miss SVG 2004 would be the first official show produced by the CDC for Vincy Mas 2004 and is slated for Saturday May 29 at the Victoria Park. A press conference is scheduled for next week where the names of the contestants for the pageant are expected to be announced.
Miss West St. George
by Rochelle Baptiste After a six-year absence, the organizers of the Miss West St. George Beauty Pageant are making a come-back this year and are promising that it will be produced at a higher standard. So says one of the organizers of the pageant, Aldine Browne. In an interview with svgbc.com, Browne says at the moment a committee of five is working hard behind the scenes to get everything in place for the pageant, which is scheduled for June. She says the committee will be meeting this weekend to get updates from all the members who were given specific tasks to perform in ensuring the pageant comes off. Browne says four young ladies have already come forward and the committee is also scouting for more young beauties who are interested in contesting the pageant. The coordinator says the pageant will be held under the theme, “Fight against crime, drugs and violence”. The winner of this year’s pageant will receive a number of prizes, including an opportunity to enter the Miss SVG Pageant 2005.
More Kaiso
by Rochelle Baptiste Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste wants to hear calypso music for the four seasons. Baptiste, who addressed the opening of a junior calypso symposium earlier this week, told the gathering that calypsonians and musicians need to constantly produce and compose songs even before and after the Carnival period. She gave the assurance that there is a future for the art form if persons are willing to take the discipline along with it. This week’s symposium was organized by the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) as part of continuing efforts to improve the quality of junior calypso presentations for this year’s calypso season and beyond.
Junior Development
by Keisha Phillips Junior calypsonians here have been advised of the need to develop the calypso art form. The advice comes from head of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), Arlene Keane-Browne, and president of the Calypsonians Association, Hassan Kennedy, who addressed the opening of today’s junior calypso symposium. Stressing the importance of calypso, Keane-Browne told the young calypsonians that it is important that in developing the art form they start with the young minds, since the older calypsonians may have fallen into bad habits that may be difficult to change. Kennedy, who expressed similar sentiments, urged the youngsters to develop themselves as they work towards developing the art form because it is their culture. He noted the opportunities for the advancement of calypso today are countless and urged the junior calypsonians to seize the moment to take the art form to higher levels. The NCF and the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) organized the symposium as part of continuing efforts to improve the quality of junior calypso presentations for this year’s calypso season and beyond. It was aimed at improving the standard of calypso compositions at the junior level, enhance the quality of stage and vocal performance in the junior calypso competition and encourage the teaching of calypso composition at the classroom level.
Mud ‘n Kolors
by Jennifer Richardson RJR is preparing to hit the road with more in 2004. The top j’ouvert band for the last seven years is this year presenting Mud ‘n Kolors. PRO of RJR Stephen Huggins says the new mud section will allow the more adventurous patrons the opportunity to explore the mud concept, while allowing those with a preference for the traditional color section to choose from either red or yellow body paint. Huggins says this is the first time that a local j’ouvert band of this size will be offering mud as a decoration for the body. He says the mud is used traditionally in j’ouvert in Trinidad and Tobago and is especially designed and refined for use on the body.
Carnival Promotion
by Zhinga Greaves Commercials promoting Vincy Mas throughout the region have already begun. Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste made the announcement recently and also noted that preparations are in the pipeline to promote the festival beyond the region. Baptiste also gave kudos to the Carnival Development Corporation and said she is pleased with the progress of their plans for this year’s festival. She was speaking at the launch of the Carnival poster for 2004, the new tourism website, www.stvincent.com.vc, and a book on dance.
New Tune
by Sheron Garraway Training seminars, fundraisers and cultural activities are just some of the issues on the agenda of the newly elected National Calypsonians Association. This month, the association will be paying courtesy calls on several government ministries and business houses, and will be meeting with tent leaders on Wednesday at the Victoria from 5pm. They hope to tackle issues such as the quality of calypsoes, tent structure and the 2004 calypso season.
Positive Notes
by Rochelle Baptiste Persons in the music industry here are being asked to use the media more positively to promote themselves and their music rather than to pull down each other. The words of advice came from Chairman of the Carnival Development Corporation Dennis Ambrose who was addressing a general meeting of the National Calypsonians Association recently. Ambrose said this kind of behavior must be stamped out as the time for it is long gone. Meanwhile, Minister of Culture René Baptiste in voicing her own concerns about the ongoing problems affecting the music industry, said musicians, especially those with the Calypsonians Association, need to put aside their prejudice and biases and bring forward the things, which will lead towards the growth of their organisation.
Better Exposure
by Rochelle Baptiste Local Artistes of all genres could look forward to a great 2004 according to Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste, who says that her ministry has great plans ahead for these artistes, who will get more exposure, training and overseas performance opportunities. Addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Calypsonians Association last weekend, Baptiste said she has recently been asked to look into the possibility of having local artistes perform at hotels in Canada, Los Angeles and the luxury tourism resort on Canouan. Baptiste said in all these cases the foundation for artistes to sell themselves is being laid. The Culture minister however said that there are a number of artistes who do not realize that their music, which includes calypso, soca and ragga soca is new to the people that engage and hire them, and must meet the required standard.
Professionalism Now
by Rochelle Baptiste Faced with much controversy the National Calypsonians Association now has a new executive charged with the responsibility of cleaning up the organisation and focusing on its plans for the next year. The nine-member executive headed by Carlos “Hassan” Kennedy was elected over the weekend at the association’s Annual General Meeting held at the Peace Memorial Hall. Kennedy, who has been performing the duties of interim president since August last year, is said to have overwhelmingly received the nod for the top post from the rest of his colleagues. He will be assisted by former national calypso monarch Kenneth “Vibrating Scakes” Alleyne as vice president. The newly elected executive will be focusing on building and strengthening the calypso tents across the country in an effort to improve the quality of calypsoes. Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste is calling on calypso tents to fix the ongoing problems, which are hampering their development. Baptiste said the various tents need to get back to past standards. The Culture minister says there is also the need to strike a desirable balance to ensure professionalism is not just a word spoken and shouted, but are actions which are indicative and evident. Baptiste said she hopes that every effort would be made to ensure that the association works out its problems and regain respect and confidence from the general public. She also revealed that the Copyright Act is now in place and is being phased in. She expressed great satisfaction with the quality of carnival music produced last year. Baptiste said she has a very high premium on the performing arts and artistes, and must congratulate the work of the association for the measures they took to bring a number of these artistes up to the standard they displayed in their music last year. Chairman of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) Dennis Ambrose challenged the association to get rid of the mounting number of controversies that it has been faced with over the years. Ambrose told the gathering that it is because of these controversies that many of the shows they organize never receive any meaningful sponsorship and leaves the burden on the CDC. Ambrose told them that it is very important that calypsonians respect the judges and the CDC. He noted that the CDC has no influence on the judges’ decisions but noted it is always final.
First Out
by Sheron Garraway Mas band Blondie Bird & Friends is inviting the public to play with them for Vincy Mas 2004. Tent leader Elroy “Blondie Bird” Boyd says they will be launching at the Anglican School Annex yard on February 1 and all are invited to learn about history while having fun. He noted that the theme “Mexica” is the indigenous name of Mexico and the costumes will be based around this context. Blondie Bird & Friends placed 3rd in the Band of the Year competition in 2003, and is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Finally Paid
by Hans King Mas bands, especially winners Digicel Hitz FM Coca Cola Nelson Bloc were in jubilant mood as they were finally able to collect their winnings for Band of the Year and the Uptown competitions yesterday. More than one month after the judging of the competitions, the way was cleared for the distribution of the prizes after an injunction granted to mas band Mirage Productions, preventing the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) from distributing the prizes was discharged on July 31. Mirage Productions however asked High Court judge Justice Brian Alleyne, who granted the injunction, to have it discharged, as the band did not want to prevent other mas bands from collecting their prizes. Mirage, who placed 5th in the Band of the Year competition and 4th in the Uptown judging however remains dissatisfied with certain aspects of the judging and will be taking the substantive matter forward. Meanwhile, speaking at the presentation ceremony CDC chairman Dennis Ambrose thanked mas bands for their patience during the court proceedings and said he hopes it would not be repeated. Ambrose said hopes that mas bands would give of their best in 2004. Chairman of Pan-Kai-Mas Hugh Ragguette said attempts were made to introduce rules and regulations for mas bands in 2003 but it was not done in time. He said he hopes this can begin as early as October this year and proposals will be circulated in September. The CDC Act makes provision for the making of rules to govern pan, calypso and mas competitions. If all goes well the CDC is hoping that Vincy Mas 2004 will fit their new slogan “More fun, more flare, and more fantasy”.
Injunction
Discharged
by Hans King The injunction granted by High Court judge Justice Brian Alleyne preventing the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) from distributing the prizes for Band of the Year has been discharged. According to CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose the judge discharged the case in its entirety this morning. But according to lawyer for Lennox “Becks” Gonsalves, Bertram Commissiong, Gonsalves volunteered to have the injunction discharged since it was never his intention to deprive mas men of their monies. Mirage was granted the injunction on July 18 2003, after placing 5th in the Band of the Year judging at the Victoria Park and 4th in the Uptown judging. The CDC held its prize-giving ceremony on Saturday July 19 2003, but the Band of the Year prizes could not be distributed due to the injunction. The discharge of the injunction now clears the way for the prizes to be distributed. But according to Commissiong the substantive case against the CDC in which Gonsalves charges that he was unfairly treated during the judging of the Band of the Year at Victoria Park will go on.
Regal Representation
by Jennifer Richardson This country is to be represented in a number of upcoming shows. First runner-up in the Miss SVG 2003 pageant, Kerina Shortte left the state this morning for Antigua where she will represent this country in the Antigua Jaycees Caribbean Queen Show Saturday. Shortte is being accompanied by chaperone June Huggins. Another contestant in the Miss SVG pageant Maurissa Bailey leaves the state tomorrow for Carriacou, accompanied by her chaperone Juanita Phillips. She will participate in the Miss Aquaval Queen Show in Carriacou also on Saturday. Josanne Simper 2nd runner-up in the Miss SVG show will be hoping to bring home the title when she competes in the Queen of the Caribbean Pageant to be held in Dominica and Guadeloupe from August 23. Josanne will be accompanied by her chaperone Laetica Clarke. Reigning Queen of Calypso and National Calypso Monarch Monique “Princess Monique” Hector leaves the state tomorrow to participate in the Caribbean Calypso Monarch show in Antigua on August 4. She is being accompanied by Cheryl Johnson.
Mas
Madness
by Hans King Vincy Mas 2003 is over but the bacchanal continues. Earlier today Mirage Productions was granted an injunction by High Court judge Justice Brian Alleyne preventing the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) from distributing the prizes for this year’s judging of the Parade of the Bands competition held at the Victoria Park and uptown Kingstown. The injunction prevents CDC from distributing the prizes for both competitions held on Tuesday July 8th, Mardi Gras, until after the hearing of an application to continue the injunction on Friday July 25th. The order from the judge concludes with a penal notice, which warns that if the CDC, whether by its servants or agents disobey the order, it or they will be liable to process of execution for the purpose of compelling to do the same. The CDC prize giving ceremony is slated for tomorrow and the prizes for the Band of the Year and Uptown competitions are among those that are down to be distributed. Lawyer Betram Commissiong QC appeared before the judge on behalf of the claimant listed as Lennox 'Becks' Gonsalves, trading as DCP Studios and Mirage Productions. Mirage placed 5th in the judging at the Victoria Park and 4th in the Uptown competition for the Band of the Year. Meanwhile CDC chairman Dennis Ambrose told svgbc.com that tomorrow’s prize giving ceremony will proceed but the two competitions listed in the injunction will be withheld until the matter is dealt with.

by Hans King Miss
SVG and Miss Carival 2003 Shivern Peters is now back on home soil in the
Grenadine island of Bequia. Peters who walked away with the coveted title of
Miss Carival last Friday returned to Bequia amidst hugs and cheers from
relatives and friends including her mother and fellow Bequia contestant in the
Miss SVG pageant Orissa Malcolm, earlier today. The 18 year-old Bequia resident
expressed pride in being the first person from the island to have won both
titles. She also talked about her plans to further her studies in Electrical
Engineering as well as to participate in the Miss Universe pageant. Peters was
especially thankful to Vinnette Frederick for her assistance with her talent.
Overall she is proud that she was able to prove herself to both her supporters
and her critics. Her mother, who was on hand to greet her, also expressed pride
in Peters and promised to keep her grounded, giving the pressures of the Miss

to national queen then Miss Carival is expected to settle back into her home
town where she hopefully can recovery from the rigors and pressures of
pageantry.
100% Vincy
by Rochelle Baptiste Contrary to belief that the calypso monarchy was given to an outsider, the woman who is wearing the crown, Princess Monique says she is 100% Vincy. Speaking to svgbc.com Princess Monique said although she is presently residing in Trinidad her heart and home is in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She also attributed her
success to being in the company of several veterans in the calypso business. She
give much thanks and appreciation to God and former Queen of Calypso and
national monarch, Lady Joy-C for her victory.
Carnival Review
by Zhinga Greaves Vincy Mas 2003 continues to get good reviews by players in the arena. Chairman of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) Dennis Ambrose has added his voice to those expressing satisfaction with this year’s festival. In an interview with svgbc.com yesterday, Ambrose expressed particular satisfaction with the timely start of Carnival shows and is hoping to maintain this next year. In
anticipation of Carnival 2004, Ambrose also urged the players within the various
components to work in tandem with the CDC in an effort to continue to improve
the Carnival product.
Carnival Crime
by Jennifer Richardson Commissioner of Police William Harry is reporting a reasonably quiet Carnival season throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but particularly so in Kingstown. According to the commissioner the dramatic decrease in the incidents of crime can be attributed to the increase presence of Police on the streets and cooperation from the general public. Generally speaking he noted that incidents
of theft was the main sore point for the Police.
Carnival Good
by Zhinga Greaves President
of Pan-Kai-Mas Hugh Ragguette feels the quality of pan, calypso and mas
components of Carnival were indeed bigger, better and brighter than in previous
years but says there are still improvements to be made. In an interview with
svgbc.com today Ragguette had high praise for the pan component noting that it
improved 100% in quality and in quantity. Ragguette took issue with the length
of the Dimanche Gras show and says never again should the show be allowed to go
for that length of time. He says the Mardi Gras show must also be examined and
changes made by the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) and the bandleaders.
Ragguette stressed the need for all stakeholders in the Carnival arena to work
together with a view to improving at all levels for Carnival 2004.
Winners Row
by Rochelle Baptiste Princess
Monique has added another title to her name; the reigning Queen of Calypso is
now also wearing the crown of National Calypso Monarch of 2003. On Sunday night
the petite young lady urged leaders of the Caribbean to take the bold step to
unify with her song “Caribbean Integration”. She supported this with words
of warning in her second song “The New Colonizers”. Last year’s monarch,
Abijah, took the second spot with “Black know what is pain” and “Ah ready
to vote”. Former National Monarch and Queen of Calypso Joy C, the first lady
to do the double, took third. She presented “Strong like ah wall” and
“Tribute to Lokeisha”. Ipa followed at fourth. The other finalists, Brother
Ebony, Jposiah, Exposer, Patches, and former monarchs Pat Ralph, Man Age, and
Sulle. Cable & Wireless Starlift Steel Orchestra dominated the senior
Panorama finals. Second was Sion Hill Euphonium; Rhythmix third; Elite Steel
Orchestra took the cellar position. The inordinately long show, which went up to
6:30am, was plagued by torrential rain due to a tropical wave in the area. King
and Queen of the bands went to Mirage Productions’ Feather Kingdom. Michael
Ollivierre with “Epcoatl – The Seashell Serpent” took a hattrick, while
Rebecca, daughter of band leader Becks Gonsalves, brought home the monarchy with
“Copper Pheasant Queen”. The other kings were Andre Browne –
“Imagination” – Digicel Hitz FM Coca Cola Nelson Bloc 2nd;
Ezzie Roberts – “Hell’s Gate” – Wizards Mas Camp 3rd; while
the queens were Jolene Wynne – “ Gold In All It’s Splendour” – Digicel
Hitz FM Coca Cola Nelson Bloc 2nd; Michele Smith – “Queen of the
Nile” – Heineken Dragons Cultural Organisation 3rd. The Road
March results again put Poorsah on the throne. His “Slingshot” ruled
Victoria Park and the road to put him ahead of newcomer, Hitz FM’s DJ Tarrus
with “Represent” 2nd, and 2003 Soca Monarch Maddzart, who placed
3rd with “Motorcade – Bikers Anthem”.
Carnival Better
by Zhinga Greaves Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) Coordinator of Shows Michael Peters says some aspects of Vincy Mas 2003 were indeed bigger, better and brighter. He had kudos for the quality of mas and said this year again saw an increase in the number of masqueraders taking to the stage for Mardi Gras. Peters also commended the calypsonians and noted that there was a general improvement in the standard of calypsoes this year over last year, and an increase in the number of pan bands. Peters says however that the soca component of Carnival was very disappointing and says masqueraders had a hard time choosing good songs to jump to. Peters says that there is too great a rivalry between mas men and also generally among participants in the various aspects of Carnival. Some of the shows were severely affected by inclement weather among them Dimanche Gras, J’Ouvert and Monday afternoon jump-up. Peters says all persons involved in the shows need to work on their level of participation and strive towards making Vincy Mas the premiere summer festival in the Caribbean.
Nelson Bloc Hattrick The creativity of mas men flooded the streets of Kingstown yesterday, and saw now eight-time champion Digicel Hitz FM Coca Cola Nelson Bloc taking Band of the Year honours with “Retrospect: Blast from the past”. This is Nelson Bloc's second hattrick, taking three consecutive titles also in the 1991-1993 period. Second was SVG Players International with “Dance Caribe”. SVGTV Guinness Blondie Bird and Friends took the third spot with “We playing fuh fun”. Fourth was Heineken Dragons Cultural Organisation with “Royalty – a tribute to Kings and Queens”. Deuce Morning Radio Mirage Productions with “Feather Kingdom” took fifth. Nelson Bloc also got the judges nod in the Up-town judging. Second was Dragons, third Players International, with Mirage placing fourth and Blondie Bird and Friends fifth.
Hitz History
by Richard Mac Leish Hitz FM created radio history by broadcasting live from the Digicel Hottsand Hitz FM sound truck during RJR’s Red Dawn J’Ouvert morning presentation on the streets of Kingstown, and on Mardi Gras, as part of Digicel Hitz FM Coca Cola Nelson Bloc’s street presentation. The broadcasts afforded local listeners and those following Hitz FM’s Soca Swing Carnival programming live on the World Wide Web courtesy CarnivalPower.com the opportunity to sample the street jam experience, integral to Vincy Mas. For Mardi Gras, Nelson Bloc revellers were also able to hear Hottsand’s music from a Dynamic Guys sound truck, which was facilitated by a Hitz FM remote link.
J’Ouvert Ran Red Torrential rain was unable to stop the J’Ouvert action early Monday morning as revellers took to the streets of Kingstown. The streets ran red as RJR, by far the biggest band on the road, dominated the Monday morning jam with music by Hottsand and the Hitz FM Road Crew. In the Individuals, 1st went to “Foul Play” by J’Ouvert Fanatics, who also took 2nd with their presentation “Samsung Blue”. Green Hill Sports and Cultural Club, with “Big Gut Water” also tied for the second position. Fourth place also went to Green Hill with “Bottling Plant”.
Junior Pan
by Rochelle Baptiste Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra is Junior Pan Side of the Year. They beat out seven other competitors with their rendition “ Lokiesha” a tribute to one of their slain colleagues. Taking the trophy for second position was last year’s winner Cable & Wireless Steel Orchestra with their rendition “100% Vincy”. The Union Island Secondary and the Girls High School tied for third position while the two convent schools tied for the fifth spot. First time entrants the CW Prescott and Troumaca primary schools settled for the seventh and eighth position. Delivering brief remarks before the winners were announced Cable & Wireless’ general manager Fred Walcott pledged his company’s continuing support for pan and Junior Panorama.
Follow
The Motorcade Soca sensation Rayon “Maddzart” Primus-Gonsalves put his bike into first gear, and popped a wheelie across the stage at Victoria Park last night in what was one of the most clean and innovative performances to appear before the judges and soca enthusiasts in the big yard. His song “Motorcade – Bikers Anthem” was slowly throttling down the soca highway on the road to the Soca Monarch crown, and on the big night, Maddzart raced away with the prize, taking the chequered flag ahead of newcomer Galanaire and his “Soca Rock” and soca diva Pat Ragguette with her “SVG”. Ragguette and Galanaire tied for second place. Maddzart's performance included Cariballet dancers replete with chequered flags, driven on stage by members of the SVG Bikers Club, as well as fireworks, confetti, and Maddzart, riding on to the stage on a bicycle. Former monarch, Poorsah, was catapulted into fourth place with his popular number “Slingshot”, which was, from radio airplay, the tipped song going into the competition. The fifth place was copped by Alla G, whose “Sweeter Wine” put him into the rankings. Topping off the show was the Invasion band, which featured 2003 T&T Soca Monarch Iwer George, 2003 Road March Fayon Lyons, and former T&T Road March Monarch, Naya George.
SVG Repeats by Richard Mac
Leish Self-proclaimed
tomboy Cheverne Peters hailing from Bequia wrested the 2003 Miss Carival
crown from a field of stiff competition to keep the coveted title here in
SVG. Peters danced and sang her way into the hearts of the judges dressed
as a typical Caribbean “Sweetman”, taking us back from the music of
the old to that of the new, and showing us that sweetness knows no age.
That
performance gave her Best Talent, to add to her Best Evening Gown and Best
Swimsuit sashes. Second was Miss Antigua Barbuda Shermain Jeremy, with Miss
T&T Tivalee Samaroo third.
Queens Bling
by Hans King The Miss Carival contestants have been given the necessary gear to “bling” on Carnival Monday. Soca Monarch
More by Hans King Competitors
in this year’s Hitz FM Hairoun Beer Soca Monarch competition will be walking
away with heavier purses this year as the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC)
increased the top prizes and appearance fees for the show. CDC chairman Dennis
Ambrose announced at a press conference this morning that the top prize has been
increased from $12,000 to $15,000. In addition to significant increases in the
runner-up positions, appearance fees have been doubled to $1,000. Ambrose said
the overall increase in price money has taken the total from $33,500, which was
paid out last year, to $42,000 for this year. The CDC chairman said the
increases make the Soca Monarch show bigger, better and brighter in keeping with
the theme for Vincy Mas 2003. He said this should inspire any artiste to enter
the competition in the future. Meanwhile, the names of the 14 finalists in the
competition have been released. The list includes 3 females – Lady D, Pat
Ragguette and Shaunelle Mc Kenzie. The male finalists are Mint, Dennis Bowman,
Maddzart, Squitty, John Dougan, Gringo, Syxx, Alla G, Galaniare, Short Man and

Semifinals On
by Hans King Fantastic
Friday, the official opening of Vincy Mas 2003 and the semifinals of the
National Calypso Competition are good to go. Speaking at a press conference at
the Carnival Development Corporation’s (CDC) office this morning, president of
the Calypsonians Association and producer of the show Conley rRose said
everything is in place for the big night. Rose said following much discussion
the bands SVG Rage and Perogative were selected to back the 20 calypsonians in
the show. Rose said he hopes that about 3,000 patrons will attend the show,
which is not just the semifinals but also the opening of Vincy Mas 2003. The
president said the only disappointing aspect of the show so far is the lack of
sponsorship support from the business community. He however thanked the CDC,
Coreas, and Bryden and Sprott for their support. Some members of the public may
also be disappointed that the Black Stalin who was scheduled to perform at the
show is unable to make it. One calypsonian from each of the six tents will
perform during the intermission.

Commish Promises
by Zhinga Greaves Commissioner of Police William Harry has promised that the Police will do all within its power to make this carnival season the safest ever. The measures the Police will be employing in doing so include having a greater presence of high-level officers on the streets, among them, the commissioner himself. Commissioner Harry is however asking the public to co-operate with them throughout the season. The Carnival action, which was officially launched weeks ago, gets into high gear this weekend with the beginning of the eleven days of Carnival.

Baptiste says the plan is to build these offices at the Victoria Park in the pavilion nearest to the Kingstown Evangelical Church. Baptiste plans to build the offices, which would have a conference area at the top of the pavilion allowing the bottom to be used by spectators. According to the minister the plans are still at the discussion stage. She says the Calypsonians Association has already submitted a complete package. Baptiste says it is important for these plans to be submitted early, as it is difficult for the ministry to respond quickly since it does not have cash at its fingertips.
More Room
by Zhinga Greaves Chairperson of the National Cultural Foundation (NFC) Arlene Keane-Browne has expressed the view that although there has been progress in the calypso arena here there is still a lot of room for improvement. Speaking at the opening of a symposium for junior calypsonians organised jointly by the NCF, the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) and the Ministry of Education yesterday Keane-Browne said the NCF is honoured to be associated with the programme noting that an event of that type is long overdue. Keane-Browne said calypso has become one of society’s outlets for self expression but noted that like anything that’s good it has undergone changes. She says change however must not be automatically interpreted in the calypso arena as being bad. Keane-Browne said she hopes the youths who attended the symposium got a better understanding of the art form and left with the knowledge of how to compose a good calypso. The event, which took place at the UWI center was held under the theme, “Preserving our culture through youth”. Meanwhile, Culture Minister René Baptiste feels the time has come for calypso to be brought into the classrooms. Baptiste said it’s important that Vincentians learn as much as possible about their culture. Baptiste said the Ministry of Education has been collaborating with her ministry over the last 18 months to include art and culture into the curriculum. She said government feels certain that the calypso art form will continue to thrive and move to a higher level than earlier days. She however urged calypsonians to strive for excellence since competition is stronger now than ever before. Baptiste also stressed the importance of culture to students here. She likened the importance of culture to one’s right to free speech. Calypsonians CP, Vibrating Scakes and Olsen Peters were among the facilitators at the symposium. Vincent Stewart provided participating students with voice training and vocal performance. Baptiste urged participants to make good use of the training provided to them in the one-day symposium.

Pesco

by Sheron Garraway Plans for Carnival festivities in the South Leeward area is taking a “two headed approach” after the merger of two organisations in that area. The Peniston Educational Sports and Cultural Organisation (Pesco) and the Layou Centre Management Committee joined forces following a meeting with the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) in February to become the South Leeward Carnival Committee. The new organisation met on February 26 to make plans for the Carnival season in Layou, Vermont and Peniston Valley from the June 1-7. The committee is encouraging persons to submit entries for a theme for the festivities, and is also soliciting entrants for the South Leeward Queen of Carnival and Calypso shows.

Fancy Fancied
by Zhinga Greaves One
of the most northern communities in this country has come in for some praise for
their participation in the just concluded Vincy Mas 2002. Speaking at this
week’s Carnival Development Committee (CDC) prize-giving ceremony, President
of Pan-Kai-Mas Hugh Ragguette commended the community of Fancy, noting that they
have made themselves a model for other rural communities to emulate. This year
for the first time Fancy produced the Primary Schools Calypso Monarch in the
person of Man Resistance and also for the first time had a finalist in
Dimanche Gras, in the person of Bum-E. Congratulations were also in order
for the Mas band Beautex International for what Ragguette says is a
significantly improved performance for 2002. The Sion Hill Euphonium was also
highly commended for its display of courage and strength in participating in
Panorama despite the brutal murder of member Lokisha Nanton who was killed just
days before the competition.
Pilling Not Pleased
by Zhinga Greaves Vincentian
masman Julian Peling Pollard is hoping that this country’s premier
cultural festival can be further developed into a culmination of local cultural
expressions. Pollard, Artistic Director of the mas band SVG Players
International says when Carnival incorporates all aspects of the Vincentian
culture, it would become truly reflective of the Vincentian people. Pollard is
expressing dissatisfaction with the build up to this year’s Carnival
activities. He says while Carnival was launched on the right note, the build-up
on a whole was not properly sustained. Pollard says he is however pleased to see
more people getting involved in Carnival this year and noted that he is
especially pleased that more older persons participated in mas.
Different Players
by Zhinga Greaves SVG Players International, the mas band which gained the most awards for the Carnival season, is attributing their hasty ascent to success to their commitment to establishing a band of a difference. That’s the word from Artistic Director of the band Julian Peling Pollard who says members were intent on creating a band steeped in theater and choreography among other things. Pollard says though the band is new, it has seasoned artistic members. This years presentation, Equinox is an extension of Players’ 2001 presentation, Zodiac, and according to Pollard the band is looking to further extend it into a trilogy come next year. Pollard says he feels that he is at his artistic best in the individual costumes and says the band intends to improve on their performance next year.

by Hans King The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) has released the results of the Uptown Judging of Mas bands for 2002. Taking the top spot is SVG Players International who placed second in the Band of the Year judging at the Victoria Park. by Zhinga Greaves Andrew Providence, Markeing Consultant of the Roises Crew, is calling on producers of the Soca Monarch show, the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) to issue a public apology to the group. Providence says as producers, the CDC should accept responsibility for the show’s outcome, and says blame for the bottle-throwing incident should not be passed off on the Roses Crew.
NCB Banks on Carival
by Hans King The state-owned National Commercial Bank continues to show its support for Carnival activities here. On Thursday July 11 Personnel Officer at the bank, Cheryl Rodriguez handed over a check of EC$5,000 for the Miss Carival show to Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Dennis Ambrose. The show was won by Miss SVG 2002, 18 year-old La Ferne Fraser. Eleven other Caribbean countries participated in the Miss Carival pageant.
Not True!
by Zhinga Greaves Popular Soca group the Roses Crew have vehemently denied allegations that they were involved in a bottle throwing incident at last Saturday’s Soca Monarch show. Marketing Consultant of the group, Andrew Providence says because of miscalculations, Roses Crew was not prepared for Saturday’s show, and as a result, fully expected not to win.
Junior Carnival Proud parents and other spectators came out in their numbers to see the future of Vincy Mas in the Junior Carnival festivities, held on Saturday June 29. The juniors proudly and eagerly strutted their stuff at Carnival City, Victoria Park displaying vibrant, colourful costumes, proof that Carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is in good hands and will go from strength to strength.
Mas Explosion
by Jeana Noel
The 25th anniversary of
Mas in July climaxed Tuesday with Mardi Gras, as thousands of masqueraders took
to the streets in their costumes. Before the street parade, the various Mas
bands converged at Carnival city, Victoria Park, where masqueraders displayed
their costumes on stage. Hitz FM Traffik Jam Nelson Bloc retained its title of Band of the Year as
the curtains came down on Vincy Mas. The over 650 members of the band invaded
the stage and the streets with twelve colorful sections from the presentation
entitled This is Carnival. This is the eighth time that Nelson Bloc has
won the title. Band leader Adonis Goat Hector, attributes success to his
team’s hard work and the varying colour schemes of the designs. Hector was
however disappointed with non-masqueraders who interjected in the
masqueraders’ band, making it unpleasant for those who paid to enjoy their Mas.
Second place went to SVG Players International with its presentation Equinox,
the dawn of good and evil, while Hitz FM Deuce Morning Radio Mirage Productions placed third with Money
Talks.

that has been absent from Carnival for a number of years.
Calypso
Monarchy
by Zhinga
Greaves Patrons of last Sunday’s Dimanche Gras show had more than their money’s worth with a variety of performances ranging from pan and extempo to mas. Calypso lovers were in for a treat with local calypso veterans and newcomers to the scene putting on a show, which was much improved over previous years. This season has seen patrons of the Carnival activities expressing dissatisfaction with the judges’ decision but it was with finality that Vincentians duly accepted Abijah as the Calypso Monarch for Vincy Carnival 2002. For the first time ever Elvis Abijah Abbey copped the title from his ten other competitors with his songs Pension and Ah jammin the party. Princess Monique, who placed third in the Queen of Calypso competition, took the second spot with her songs What we stand for and Sailor man. Singers and Jesters and I believe did it for Robert Patches Knights earning him the third position in the Calypso finals. 2002 Queen of Calypso and last year’s winner of the Calypso Finals, Joy C had to settle for the fifth spot with her renditions of Not guilty and We culture. Other participants were Bum-E, Exposer, Brother Ebony, The-man-Age, former Calypso King Glennroy Sulle Caesar, Black Ebou, and Little Bit.

which came off Wednesday July 3 at the Victoria Park is now the owner of
a brand new car.
No More Bars?
by Zhinga Greaves Carnival revelry at the most popular hang out spot in Kingstown might soon become a thing of the past as the Police intensifies its drive to have the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) stop street bars from operating in the Heritage Square area. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday July 4, Commissioner of Police William Harry says the area is unsuitable for that type of entertainment and says he hopes the problem will not exist beyond this year’s Carnival celebrations. Commissioner Harry suggested that the area be turned into an arcade where persons can go for relaxation rather than excitement. The Commissioner’s view was supported by Superintendent Christopher of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), who says the area is an important aspect of Vincentian’s history. By holding such activities there, he says, Heritage Square is being degraded.
Junior Soca Monarch Turn yo bumper did it for Cornesha Cooke of the Barrouallie Secondary School who beat 14 competitors to take the top spot in the first ever Junior Soca Monarch competition, which was held on Tuesday July 2.

Mas
Eruption by Hans King
Vincy Mas 2002 kicked out in fine
still Friday June 28 with a show dubbed Mas Eruption, which featured the
different components of Carnival and saw the honouring of a number persons who
have contributed to Vincy Mas over the last 25 years. It was an eruption of
Vincentian culture as pan, mas, and calypso came together for the launch of
Vincy Mas 2002. Providing the pan music was Starlift Steel Orchestra, which was
also honoured for the organisation’s sterling contribution to Vincy Mas over
the last 25 years. The Extempo competition was also part of the grand occasion
with journalist William Kojah Anthony singing on the topic Vendors,
taking the crown. Wallbou, who sang on Channel sixty-nine, placed second
while D-Dale who sang on Mother-in-laws placed third. Following the
Extempo competition, patrons were treated to the best of Vincy Mas with the

Carival title for the first time in 15 years. Miss SVG 2002 La Ferne
Fraser got the judges’ nod from a field of twelve contestants in the
pageant, which took place at the Victoria Park last evening. Ironically,
Fraser’s trainer for the pageant, Roxanne Dalrymple, was the last
Vincentian to win the Miss Carival title in 1987. Fraser had wanted to
make it a Vincy Mas 25th Anniversary gift for this country
and she delivered, out-performing all her competitors to take the title.

Tarway
Crowned by Jeana Noel Mighty Tarway is the 2002 Calypso Monarch of Bequia. He won the title from a field of eight contenders in the competition, which took place at the Bedrock Disco last evening. Second was lone female Zonel, while former monarch Roots Gordon placed 3rd. The calypso competition was the only show for Bequia Carnival 2002, which is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Bequia. The Carnival climaxes with a street jump-up on Monday. The Rotary Club was forced to cut back on shows this year since members of the public were unwilling to participate due to dissatisfaction over last year’s Carnival. One club member says they were forced to scale down Carnival activities this year after 33 letters seeking sponsorship of EC$15,000 only realized EC$500. The member says the EC$15,000, if raised would have been in addition to a promised EC$20,000 by CDC, and a further EC$10,000 in anticipated gate receipts. But according to him, they had to scale down the Carnival and present a revised budget to the CDC, which gave them just over EC$8,000 in addition to the EC$500 raised. Hence the only activities planned for the Carnival were the calypso show and the street jump up on Monday. The Bequia Rotary Club reassumed responsibility for Bequia Carnival this year after a three-year break.

Rauseo says he is impressed so far with the contestants and with the support the ladies have been getting from the Beauty Shows Committee, something, which he says is necessary for boosting their confidence. Rauseo, who is also the Artistic Director of Miss Trinidad & Tobago World, emphasised the need for the Caribbean to raise its standards at pageants, and urged this country to re-enter contestants for the Miss World and Universe pageants, since there are over 600 Million viewers to these shows. This he says can help tourism.
Calypso
Woes? by Jeana Noel Less than a week after the 2002 Calypso season opened, at least two Calypso tents are expressing dissatisfaction with the arrangements being made to accommodate them. The Calypso Theatre and the Graduates Calypso Tent say they are extremely disturbed by the news that negotiations were ongoing for the Carnival Development Committee (CDC), to secure the Touch Entertainment Center (TEC), owned by the SVG Teachers Union, as the venue for tent shows. The two tents say the venue is inappropriate for reasons, which include insufficient parking, insufficient seat capacity, and inadequate exits. But according to officials from the SVG Calypsonians Association (SVGCA), the body met with representatives from the tents and the decision on TEC was agreed on consensus. The SVGCA and CDC say the decision has already been made on the venue and there is no intention to revisit the issue.

of the Carnival Development Committee, (CDC) Dennis Ambrose says the committee
is going all out to make this year’s Carnival the best one ever. To this end,
Ambrose says the committee is promoting this year’s festival on a grand scale.
He says promotion is currently being done in several countries including
Trinidad and Tobago. Similar promotion is also being done in Barbados, Grenada,
St. Lucia, and Antigua among other countries. Ambrose says Liat is also
distributing posters and flyers to the various agents in the Caribbean. He says
local Immigration Officers are also joining the effort by distributing Carnival

by Zhinga Greaves Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Dennis Ambrose has announced that the response to the launch of the 25th Anniversary of Vincy Mas 2002 surpassed the committee’s expectations by far. Ambrose, who was speaking at a press conference at the CDC’s office this morning, says not only has this response surpassed expectations but it has also surpassed the response to last year’s launch. Adding to this year’s success he says are Police reports that Saturday’s launch was incident and accident free. Ambrose thanked the sponsors and well wishers of Vincy Mas and made another appeal to members of the business sector to give their financial support to the festival since this will help to boost advertising and bring more visitors to the country. by Zhinga Greaves Chairman
of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Dennis Ambrose is calling on the
business community to re-examine itself and come forward with more sponsorship
for Carnival festivities. Ambrose commended many longstanding and more recent
sponsors of Carnival activities, but called on more businesses to come forward
since they in turn will benefit. Ambrose promised shows of a higher calibre this
year and announced that a number of regional artistes will be performing

Changes
by Hans King Several changes relating to the judging of costumes will be introduced for Vincy Mas 2002. President of Pan-Kai-Mas Hugh Ragguette says these changes that relate to issues ranging from lights to footwear were recently approved at a meeting of the Carnival Mas Bands Association (CMBA). Over the years Vincentians have grown accustomed to seeing bright lights of varying colours being used in the judging of costumes in the night. This year, as Vincy Mas marks its 25th anniversary of the change over to June/July, this would become a thing of the past. CMBA has taken a decision that only white lights will be used to judge the costumes based on three factors, judges will be able to see clearly and distinctly the various costumes, the cameras of TV and print press will be better able to reproduce pictures of the costumes, and lastly, white lights will enhance the stage backdrop which be built to facilitate costumes and costume design. Ragguette says the decision has also been taken to introduce backstage judging this year. Costumes will be adjudged on neatness and finish prior to appearing onstage. Masqueraders and band leaders will however have one less thing to worry about this year, and may in fact save some money as footwear will not be judged as part of the costume.
No Increases
by Hans King The
Mas Bands Association (MBA) will not be seeking any increases in prize monies
this year. President of Pan-Kai-Mas Hugh Ragguette says the association made the
decision not to seek any prize increases this year following the September 11
terrorist attacks in the United States last year.
Graduates 15
by Hans King The Graduates Calypso Tent has announced a 15-member cast for the 2002 Calypso season. Among those in line-up is the Black Ebou, who will be returning to the tent after receiving strong support for his appearance last year. The tent will however be without one of its foremost Calypsonians this year, as former monarch De Man Age has opted to perform with the New York-based Calypso Tent that will be taking part in this year’s activities. Graduates will be backed by the band Rage this year, and regular tent activities are expected to start on May 28. The tent captured 8 of the 18 places in the National Semifinals last year, along with 2 reserve spots from a cast of 13. Other big names in the tent include former monarchs Sulle and Mighty Sheller, as well as former Junior Monarch Johnny P, former Queen of Calypso Little Bit, and veterans Lexy and Observer.
Carival
Change by Hans King At least one change has been made to the Miss Carival Show for this year. According to a release from the Carnival Development Committee (CDC), the judging of the Talent category will take place on Thursday July 4, one day before the night of the show.
Web Promotion
by Jeana Noel
The
promotion of Vincy Mas 2002 on Webb Internet Radio in New York is expected to
have positive implications for this country in the long-term. This is the view
of Marketing Manager in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Glen Beache, who
pointed out that the promotion is not only about Carnival. Acording to Beache,
there are still many people who do not know of the existence of St. Vincent and
the Grenadines. Beache also said that the use of Webb Internet Radio is timely,
since there is a need to be more aggressive with the promotion of this
country’s tourism product.
Webbcast
by
Jeana Noel The Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Carnival Development Committee (CDC), are embarking on a new initiative to promote this country’s premier festival. Beginning next Tuesday April 9, Vincy Mas 2002 will be promoted on internet radio. Smac Productions, a company in New York owned by persons from the Carribean, has been awarded the contract for the promotion, which will be done on their internet radio station, Webb Internet Radio. According to Marketing Manager in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Glen Beache, the initiative is a good way for this country to be promoted on an international scale. There will also be live broadcasts of three Carnival shows; the three are yet to be selected. Following Carnival, promotion of this country as a tourist destination will continue until September. CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose says promotion of this kind is necessary to make the festival a success. Managing Director of Smac Productions Michael Callender says the agency is pleased to be associated with SVG, since the main aim of the company is to promote the Caribbean to the world. He pointed out that the Vincentian community in New York is hungry for information on this country, hence he is pleased that Webb radio can provide this service.

by Sheron Garraway The Reigate Complex came alive with activity yesterday when Owen Ralph and the Professionals launched their line for 2002, dubbed Colours of the Caribbean. Gao
Gutted by Richard Mac Leish One of SVG’s most humourous proponents of the Calypso artform, Godwin Augustus Gao Oliver lost his home to a fire Last Friday. His 2-storey house at Langley Park apparently caught afire about noon on that day, while Gao was in the mountains. Reports say efforts by neighbours to douse the flames proved futile.
Tent
Space? by Hans King The problem of tent space for Mas bands is once again surfacing as the 2002 Carnival season gets in gear. Leader of the Mas band Nelson Bloc, Adonis Goat Hector, says this is the major problem affecting the band presently. However, the band will be participating in Vincy Mas this year with its production This is Carnival.
Miss SVG 2002 The eight contestants who will participate in the Miss SVG Pageant 2002 made their first public appearance today.Latica Clarke, Rochelle Baptiste, Jennilee Glasgow, Valdine Wynne, Leisha Dorsette, Neisha Lavia, LaFerne Fraser, and Fianasha DeBique met with members of the local press at the Camelot Inn Hotel this morning. Head of the Beauty Shows Committee, Cheryl Rodriguez, described the ladies as “an impressive bunch” and promised a sterling performance from the contestants.
Calypso Humour
by Hans King A project aimed at developing the merging of the Calypso artform and humor is expected to be launched here later this year. Chairman of Caribbean Prestige Promotions, William Munro, who has made this his latest project, was in the state laying the groundwork for the launch and searching for talent.
Mas Complaints?
by Jeana Noel Complaints from Mas bands over the results of the Mas component of Carnival are expected to be a thing of the past. This is according to President of PanKaiMas, Hugh Ragguette, who says some Mas bands expressed dissatisfaction with last year’s results. He noted that this was not the first time that complaints were made, but Mas bands have committed to accept the final results from now on.
Players
Cheque’d SVG Players International will again be playing Mas for the 2002 Carnival season, thanks to the Omni Corp. Financial Group, which has sponsored the band for a second consecutive year.
Good Responses The Carnival Development Committee, CDC, is already reporting good responses from North America, especially Canada and New York for Vincy Mas 2002. Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Minister of Culture René Baptiste, noted that a team from the CDC will be travelling to North America in early May to launch Vincy Mas.
Promoting Carnival
by Jennifer Richardson A promotional campaign being planned by the Carnival Development Committee, CDC, could see thousands of visitors coming to this country this year for the 25th Anniversary of Vincy Mas in July. Speaking at a CDC press conference this morning, Chairman Dennis Ambrose, says overseas promotion last year paid dividends, and they are hoping to capitalize on that this year.
Liat, The Caribbean airline, has been named the official airline of Vincy Mas 2002. Today, Manager of Liat’s St. Vincent’s office, Dominique Patterson, said Liat was pleased to be once again playing a major role in promoting Vincy Mas, having done so over the last 25 years. Patterson says last year, Liat brought in over 5,000 people to this country in June alone, and is hoping to better that figure this year.
Stars First
by Jennifer Richardson The Stars Calypso Tent has taken the lead in being the first to announce its cast for the 2002 Calypso season. The twelve-member cast includes Joy C, Sick, Defoe, Wassy, Wolde Dawit, Laylee, Lady D, John Dougan, Dasling, Patches, Gams and Blogo. The tent held its audition and a mini workshop last Saturday at the Perogative band room at Rose Place. Public Relations Officer Devon ‘Blogo’ Phillips says nine Calypsonians attended the audition, and all were selected due to the poor attendance.
Invasion Guadeloupe
by
Hans King A delegation of 160 to 170 persons from the French island of Guadeloupe is expected in this country for Vincy Mas 2002. This according to Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste who recently visited there as a guest of the Guadelope Department of Culture.
Stars
by Zhinga Greaves Calypso fans can expect quality music from the Stars Calypso Tent for Vincy Mas 2K2. That’s the word from the P.R.O. the tent, Devon ‘Blogo’ Phillips. Phillips says that in preparation for this year’s Carnival, the tent has already elected a new executive with Robert ‘Patches’ Knights at its helm as President. Phillips says the tent will also hold a number of Calypso shows through out the country in the run up to Vincy Carnival 2K2. The tent will be launched in April.
Carnival Poster Early
by Zhinga Greaves Carnival
preparations here are gaining momentum, as this country gets ready to celebrate
the 25th Anniversary of Vincy Mas in July. This is signaled by the unprecedented
early launching of a Carnival poster by the Carnival Development Committee, CDC,
earlier today. CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose expressed satisfaction with the
actual launching and says that the poster, which depicts both daytime and
nighttime festival activities, is an impressive effort. The poster, which is
available in full size and scaled versions, have already been released at Labour
Day celebrations in New York, and was also distributed to businesses in the New
York and Washington areas. Ambrose says the committee still has other plans in
the pipeline for further developing the festival. He says Coordinator of Shows
Michael Peters has recently submitted a number of proposals on upgrading
Carnival shows, and says that as many suggestions as possible will be
implemented for the 2002 Carnival festivities. The poster was designed by Alex
Barnwell, a local graphic artist. Vincy Carnival 2002 officially begins on June
28 and runs through to July 9.
CDC Bill
by Zhinga Greaves A
Bill for the incorporation of the Carnival Development Committee, CDC, is to get
its first reading in Parliament on February 19. This was revealed by Minister of
Culture René Baptiste, who was speaking at the launching of the 2002 Carnival
poster earlier today. Baptiste is confident that the final Act will be passed,
since she says Cabinet has expressed supreme satisfaction with CDC’s 2001
performance. She however cautioned that as a corporation, CDC cannot function in
an adhoc manner, since the level of accountability will be significantly
increased providing the Act is passed. Baptiste says being the one to move the
Bill in Parliament is a moment of glory for her, since she was the Assistant
Secretary of the CDC in 1981 and was always in support of the incorporation. The
2001 CDC is still serving its functions after tending a Financial Report, which
Baptiste says was pleasing to Cabinet. Blondie
Likes It So Mas band Blondie Bird and Friends is taking a head start for Vincy Mas 2002. Band leader, Errol ‘Blondie Bird’ Boyd, says the theme for this year ‘We like it so’, was inspired by recent results and says the designs are not complicated.
Calypso Future
by Zhinga Greaves Minister of Culture René Baptiste says though it is natural for people to want to hold on to their positions, the time is fast approaching for some members of the Calypsonians Association to let go. The Minister was at the time speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the association, which was held last weekend. She says there are operational and organizational weaknesses within the association, which arise from the fact that members perform multiple duties. Baptiste also noted that many organizations have difficulty with their financial structure but pointed out that this can be helped with proper planning. The Minister however commended the association on work done during the course of last year, which included building stage craft, hosting copyright seminars, symposiums and other activities.
Democratic Culture? The Calypsonians Association here has called for more democracy in decisions that involve the Carnival Development Committee, CDC, and the association. This statement comes in response to a Bill put forward for the incorporation of the Calypsonians Association and the Carnival Development Committee. Following an extended meeting held last Thursday, the association released a statement saying that it is of the opinion that a greater level of decentralization is needed within the functions of the CDC. The association also feels that the proposed Bill is too legalistic and curtails the free expression of cultural artistes within the state. The association proposes that the organizing of competition shows during the Carnival season be not exclusive to the CDC, due to the fact that the Calypso Preliminaries and Semifinals are organized by the association. The association also objects to the CDC approving the list of judges for any calypso show, since they say this is the priority and jurisdiction of the association.
Queen of Caribbean
by Sheron Garraway A
contestant is needed from SVG to participate in the Queen of Caribbean Pagent on
August 18. The pageant, which will
be hosted in Dominica, will see 18 ladies from across the Caribbean vie for the
prestigious title. The organization hopes the pageant will be an annual event,
to be rotated throughout the various Caribbean countries. They also hope to
present an award to famous West Indian Cricket Record Holder Courtney Walsh at
the event.
Sanitation Cocktails
by Jennifer Richardson Sanitation Workers in Kingstown will
exchange their brooms and shovels for wine glasses and finger foods when they
will be treated to cocktails this afternoon compliments Prime Minister Dr. Ralph
Gonsalves. The Prime Minister says the event is in recognition of the hard work
put in by these workers in cleaning up the city after the Carnival season. The
cocktails take place at the Environmental Health Building this afternoon.
CDC Chairman Dissatisfied
by Sheron Garraway Some
local businesses have been given a tongue-lashing for their failure to
contribute to Vincy Carnival 2001. The tongue-lashing came during last
Saturday’s Prize Giving Ceremony at the Catholic Pastoral Centre. Persons at
the prize giving also heard that a permanent body will soon be established to
run Carnival. A bill to this effect will be laid in the House of Assembly on
Thursday. Though thankful for the
contributions of Corporate St. Vincent to Vincy Mas 2001, Chairman of
the CDC Dennis Ambrose used
Saturday’s Prize Giving Ceremony to chide businesses whom he says
benefit immensely from Carnival but refuse to contribute. Meanwhile,
Minister of Culture and Tourism René Baptiste wants to see more
organization on the part of artistes in this country. Stressing
that Vincy Mas must go from strength to strength, Baptiste said attempts would
be made to showcase Vincy Mas at
other regional and international festivals. It was also a time for
congratulations as Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves acknowledged the efforts
by the Culture Minister to bring a more businesslike approach to Carnival and to
get legislation in place to better govern the functioning of the CDC. Chairman
of Pan Kai Mas Hugh Ragguette urged the artistes to take full advantage of
workshops since these will improve the quality of the shows. Saturday’s Prize
Giving Ceremony saw top
calypsonians including National Calypso Monarch Joy C, Mas men, J’ Ouvert
bands and others receiving their prizes.
Godfrey Takes OECS Soca Monarch by Jeana Noel 2000 Road March King Godfrey Dublin has added another title to his name. Dublin, with his hit song ‘To Take Away’ captured the first ever OECS Soca Monarch title, held in St. Lucia last evening. The competition is a new feature on the Carnival programme for St. Lucia, and is aimed at exposing Carnival revellers to Soca music in the Eastern Caribbean. The former member of the band ‘Touch’ won from a field of fourteen other artistes from St. Lucia, Antigua, Dominica, Barbados, St. Kitts Nevis, Montserrat, British Virgin Islands and Grenada.
Baptiste Satisfied
by Hans King Minister of Tourism and Culture René Baptiste says Carnival 2001 has lived-up to its promise of being bigger and better and has even surpassed her expectations. The Culture Minister says the presence of a number of foreign media houses here for the festival was also critical and would aid in the marketing of next year’s Carnival. Baptiste says she was also happy with the fact that more Mas bands and masqueraders participated in this year’s festival but some masqueraders display of their Mas was not pleasing. Baptiste says she is also happy about the standard of calypso this year and the return of Junior Panorama. She says that hopefully the Youlou Pan Movement would work out its programme for next year and one could see a return of Senior Panorama. The Culture Minister says the Police, in particular the Traffic Branch, the Sanitation Department, the Carnival Development Committee and all its sub-committees did an excellent job. Meanwhile, Baptiste says the draft bill to make the CDC a permanent body has been prepared and is ready for circulation. She says discussion on this started before 1981 when she was the Assistant-Secretary of the CDC and she hopes the debate will proceed speedily. Road

says the piracy is not only practiced locally, but also by Vincentians living
abroad. He says serious action
needs to be taken to curb this problem. Becket has produced a documentary video

Eruption

by Faylene Scrubb
Efforts
are being made to revive the Carnival Monday Afternoon Street Party, in this
country. According to Omar Davis of OMS Promotion Crew, his company is making a
big effort to revive the splendour and glamour of the activity. Davis says not
much activity has taken place over
the last few years and OMS Promotions is therefore working with various
organizations and companies to ensure the street party is revived to a level
that Vincentians had become accustomed. He says they want persons jumping with
the promotion to have a good time and are targetting some 2,400 revellers. The
band is being sponsored by Coreas, Western Union, Heineken, St. Vincent
Container Corporation, BMC Agencies, and SVGTV and Hitz FM. Divisional Manager
at Corea’s Jimmy Forde says his company’s involvement in the production is
one of quality, as they are associating quality products and are expecting a
quality production. Davis is urging persons interested in being part of the
Eruption band to secure their t-shirts early. Mas

who has been involved in judging calypso since 1990, says judges should
basically judge what they see on the night the calypso is performed. He says he
does not believe in setting criteria as to whether calypsonians should sing one
social commentary and one jumpy song for the national competition. Apparicio is
also calling for a standardized structure for judging calypso across the region,
with the involvement of CARICOM. He says the standardization of the artform is
necessary if we are to get the material across the region. Meanwhile treasurer
of the Calypsonians Association, Grantley Ipa Constance says he is satisfied
with the judging symposium held last weekend. Constance says the prospective
judges also expressed satisfaction with the workshop and have already planned
meeting to discuss the information gathered. He says the ranking system of
judging calypsoes is likely to be used in this years calypso competition. The
Preliminaries begin this Thursday June 14
to June 20. First to be judged
will be the Brigade Calypso Tent followed by the Stars on Friday June 15.
North and South Renegades will be judged on June 16 and the Calypso
Theatre on June 17. Next will be the Prophets Calypso Tent on June 18 and
Graduates on June 19.

June 20. All shows will take place at the Russell’s Cinema.

The St. Vincent and Grenadines Calypsonians Association is hosting a symposium targeting practicing and aspiring calypso judges. Zan George of the calypsonians association says the objective of the exercise is to improve the standards of judges so that calypsonians can feel comfortable with the final results. The resource persons are Maurel Peters from Trinidad and Tobago, Vincentian Olsen ‘Caribbean Pete’ Peters, along with an official from Antigua. There will also be addresses from executive secretary of the Carnival Development Committee and from a government minister. Tomorrow’s activity will be held at the St. Martin’s Secondary School from 10 a.m. Calypso

Calypso Theatre will present its cast for the 2001 carnival season at the
Russell’s Cinema tonight. The cast includes veterans Scakes, Abijah, Toiler,
Sunblaze, Sonny Banks and the Mighty Rey. Calypsonian Snuffy whose song ‘Eat

Several new comers including Angel with the song ‘Leave him out’ and
‘Molescia’ are also part of the 2001 cast. The launch will see the return of
calypsonian Paper to the calypso arena and will feature performances from Sweet
Sixteen, Dalpin out of Tortola, and Jeremiah John out of Barbados. The band
starwahs.com will provide backing music for the tent.
Music
Bands Corporation by Jeana Noel There is no dispute between the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Calypsonians Association, tent leaders, and the Music Bands Corporation. This is according to a statement released by the calypsonian association which expressed support for the music bands providing back stopping music for calypso tents. The association also expressed sympathy to the concerns of the music bands, but explained that it does not have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the Carnival Development Committee. The music bands are asking to be registered as a bona fide component of carnival. The calypsonians association says it looks forward to an amicable settlement to the dispute between the CDC and the music bands as soon as possible. Mirage
Cocktail
by Jeana Noel
With
just over three weeks to go before the official date for Carnival 2001, Mirage
Productions is on schedule with its preparation.
Mirage started preparing for the 2001 mas competition about three weeks
ago, and according to bandleader Lennox ‘Becks’ Gonsalves, all is going well
so far. This year’s production ‘Cocktail’, is a follow up to last year’s
‘Shake that cocktail’, but as Gonsalves explains there’s a different
twist. Last year the theme was on the actual cocktail drinks but for 2001, the
theme shifts to the ingredients and emphasis on the names of the cocktails. The
band has eight adult sections including Jungle Juice, Mona Lisa, Blue Dragon,
Caribbean Kiss, Erotica, Anti Freeze, Black Russian and Mirage.
The children sections are SVG#1, Jungle Juice, Magic Star and Humming
Bird. Having placed second in the band of the year competition last year
Gonsalves is confident of the band’s potential to perform well at the
competitive level but says his focus is not on competition. Gonsalves says his
satisfaction comes from producing an attractive product that affords
masqueraders a good Mardi Gras experience. The band is catering for three
hundred adults and one hundred children for this year. EKU

the brewery is happy to be associated with Mirage.

Carnival
Promotion
by Jeana Noel
Vincy Carnival 2001 will get a
special promotional boost in the United States this week. Minister of Culture
René Baptiste and chairman of the Carnival Development Committee Denis Ambrose
will visit Washington, New York and New Jersey to promote the festival. The
minister and the chairman will meet with Vincentian associations and travel
agents, in the three states. They
will discuss the national festival on mainland St. Vincent and on Bequia and
Union Island. The delegation returns to the state on the weekend. Fife
Looks Forward by Hans King One down one more to go, that’s the goal of Michelle Fife, this country’s new Carnival Queen. The 21 year-old Fife is now back on her job as the manager’s secretary at the Government Employees Co-operative Credit Union after capturing the Miss SVG 2001 title at the Victoria Park on Saturday. Fife who has had some time to settle down since the victory says she is still overwhelmed at winning the title. The newly crowned royalty who plans to pursue studies in law, says she continues to stay focused with some help from above and those close to her, despite criticism from certain sections of society. Fife says capturing the Miss Carival title is her next challenge. The show which had a larger turn out this year saw Miss DIPCON Engineering Ellon Douglas, capturing the 1st runner up position while Miss Building and Loan Association Tammy Gittens placed 2nd. Miss Rootsman Boutique Rosanna Williams was awarded Best Talent and Miss Photogenic while Miss Clarissa Edwards won Miss Congeniality. The other contestant was Miss Mustique Airways, Lanique Findlay. Sheller
Out by Faylene Findlay-Scrubb Seven-time
Calypso Monarch Jeffers Alexis - the Mighty Sheller, has released two tracks for
this year’s carnival season. The veteran calypsonian says the calypsoes
‘Light years ahead’ and ‘Changes’ are two very good tracks of quality
and class. The Mighty Sheller who sings with the Graduates Calypso Tent, says he
is hoping to go all the way with the tracks, and is expecting positive results.
He is also of the view that Vincy Carnival 2001, is well on the way to being
bigger and better. Graduates
Stumped by Hans King The
Graduates Calypso Tent has once again cancelled its launching which was
scheduled for this evening at the Russell’s Cinema. A release from the tent
states that the show was called off yesterday after the brass men and some band
members of Salid, the tents backing band, did not turn up at a dress rehearsal.
The band first cancelled the show last Tuesday calling for the brass men
who are members of the Police Force to be given adequate time to practice with
calypsonians. While the releases states that tent apologies for the cancellation
it further states that the tent will continue to cancel all shows until the cast
is fully satisfied with the quality of rehearsals.
Music
Bands Unify
by Jeana Noel
Several
local musical bands providing accompaniment for the calypso tents shows are
asking to be registered as a component of carnival. The bands have formed themselves into the Music Bands
Corporation with a view to having their interests addressed. Among the concerns
of the organization, headed by Kenneth Scakes Alleyne of the band “Sta-Wahs.com”
is the fact that the bands are not recognized as a bona fide component of
Carnival. But while the association says it is concerned about the little
respect given to the local bands it has pledged that it will continue to support
the calypso tents. The association will on Sunday hold a concert entitled Jam-o-rama.
The show takes place at the Victoria Park and features six private bands.

one of two persons who will be honored at Cultural Diversity II, a show set for
Sunday June 10, in Brooklyn. The other person is Grenadian Val Adams. They will

particular, and Caribbean culture in general. Becket, who give fans popular hits
like Teaser, Small Pin, and Calypso Noel has performed all over the world and

New York Knicks, and the glitzy Radio City Music Hall.
Graduates
by Faylene Findlay Scrubb
The Graduates Calypso Tent will launch their 2001 cast next
Tuesday evening. A release from the tent says it has had to cancel its opening
show planned for tomorrow evening, due to the unavailability of brass men. The
tent says while there is commitment from the brass men, they have not been
released from their regular duties, for rehearsals with the Calypsonians. Graduates says it is therefore issuing a call for the police band members
working with tents for the season, to be released for rehearsals and tent shows.
Meanwhile, the tent is also expressing dissatisfaction with the general response
for sponsorship, noting that this has left many tents ‘scrunting’ for start
up capital, thus reducing the number of shows planned. On Tour Opens by
Hans King The On Tour Calypso Tent will be playing its part in making sure that Vincy Mas 2001 is bigger and better. That’s the word from tent leader Carlos Rejector Providence. The tent is expected to launch its ten-member cast at the South Rivers Methodist School this Saturday before moving into capital Kingstown at the Russell’s Cinema next week Wednesday. The cast includes calypsonians Zion I, Abby, Groovy D, Gao, Prince Marcus, Freedom Fighter, Pablo, Rastaman I, Ipa and Rejector. Rejector says patrons can expect a blend of biting social commentary, humour and party songs from the ten-member cast. He is also appealing for Vincentians to come out and support the tent this year. Tent member Grantley Ipa Constance, is also appealing for support for On Tour and all other calypso tents. The Preliminary Calypso Show of the tent where members are judged for selection to the National Semifinals, is expected to be carried live exclusively on Hitz Fm for the second straight year. Saladino
Donation

CDC
is on the way to realizing its
close to one million dollars budget for Vincy Mas 2001. Businessman Antonio
Saladino of Canouan Resorts Development Company Limited today presented Minister
of Culture Rene Baptiste with a cheque valued at 15 thousand U.S. dollars.
Saladino says as a citizen of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, he is pleased to
support local culture. He also took the opportunity to appeal to other local
businesses to support the festival. Baptiste expressed gratitude to Saladino,
noting that the arts cannot survive without financial support. CDC chairman
Dennis Ambrose also expressed gratitude for the donation and disclosed that more
sponsorship is forthcoming. Calypso
History
by Jeana Noel Grade five and six students of the Kingstown Anglican School were today given a brief history on the calypso art form in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Leader of the Calypso Theatre Tent, Kenneth Scakes Alleyne and entertainer Jeffery Snuffy Martin conducted the activity. The two also did some renditions. Some of the calypsoes examined included “Our nation is born”, “I love you St. Vincent”, “Revive Carnival”, and “Mambo in the disco”. Teacher at the school, Henry Ashton, indicated that the students reacted excellently to the exercise. He says this gives an indication that they are thirsting for such activities. He says in order to keep the student’s interest; calypso should form a more integral part of music, which is one of the subject’s on the school’s curriculum. Keep Carnival Clean
by Hans King Minister of Tourism and Culture, Rene Baptiste is appealing to Vincentians to keep Vincy Mas 2001 clean and peaceful. Baptiste made the appeal as she addressed a large gathering at Unity Square last Saturday attending the launch of the national Carnival festival. The Minister of Culture along with a delegation from the CDC is expected to leave the state soon to promote the festival in New York and Washington. Baptiste says promotional material has also been sent to the Black Entertainment Television, BET, and talk show host Oprah Winfrey. The all day affair, which began at ten in the morning, featured among other things the appearance of the Miss SVG 2001 Pageant contestants. The six, Ellon Douglas, Clarissa Edwards, Michelle Fife, Lanique Findlay, Tammy Gittens and Rosanna Williams, gave the large gathering a taste of what to expect from them on June 2 when the big show takes place. The launch also featured a display of sections of two of the mas bands from their 2001 productions. Entertainment was also provided from a number of calypsonians including Fatty-Dan. The launch despite its hitches was without a doubt, bigger and better. Miss SVG Sponsors

as calypsonians Fatty Dan and Prince Marcus, are also expected to perform with
the musical band Signal providing background music. The launch is expected to
conclude with another innovation for this year, a street jump-up around capital
Kingstown with the musical band Rage and a popular DJ. In keeping with this
year’s theme, ‘Bigger and Better’, CDC Chairman Dennis Ambrose says the
launch will be one that Vincentians would not want to miss.

Calypso
Theatre 2001 by Faylene Findlay-Scrubb
The
Calypso Theatre will be producing a tent with a difference for the 2001 Calypso
season. That’s according to tent leader, Kenneth ‘Vibrating Scakes’
Alleyne. Scakes says the tent, which would be launched on Sunday June 3, at the
Victoria Park, is a mixture of seasoned as well as new calypsonians. Scakes says
the Calypso Theatre is trying to make a good production, noting that there are
deficiencies in the calypso product in St. Vincent.
Carnival Budget
by Hans King The Carnival Development Committee says it’s targeting a budget of close to one million dollars, for Vincy Mas 2001. Chairman of CDC, Dennis Ambrose, says government’s subvention to this is $275,000 with government indicating a willingness to increase that amount. He says the business community has also been responding favorably so far. Ambrose says this year’s budget caters for planned improvement in the technical and infrastructure facilities at the home of Vincy Mas, the Victoria Park. Carnival Promotion
by Hans King Promotion for Vincy Mas 2001 is progressing smoothly, so says Public Relations and Marketing Officer of the CDC, Glen Jackson.
